Lion House Taffy

Recipe from Mimi (Lion House)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 1/2 cup water

  • 1 cup light Karo syrup

  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 2 Tbs butter

  • 2 tsp glycerine

  • Wax paper

  • Candy thermometer

Directions

Add ingredients to pan and stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, not scraping sides of the pan, add sugar, water, syrup and salt.

Cook slowly to a boil (medium setting) to hardball stage—258˚ to 259˚ (246˚ for high altitude).

Add vanilla at softball stage. Remove from heat and add butter and glycerine.

Pour onto a well buttered cookie sheet. Pick up edges with spoon and turn in. Let it rest until it can be handled (about 10 minutes).

Butter hands. Cut into workable portions, pull taffy till it turns white and stiffens, cut and roll into long strands, then cut with stainless scissors into bite size pieces.
